2024 Lava Fire, Idaho
(182 photos)

The Lava Fire started by lightning September 2, 2024. It was 2,493 acres on September 8. The next day it merged with the Boulder Fire, growing to 78,457 acres. Several "complex incident management teams" (CIMTs) as well as Type 3 IMTs rotated to manage the Lava Fire. The fire burned on the Boise National Forest and Payette National Forests, damaging infrastructure including campgrounds, roads and bridges. I served as a public information officer with NVIMT1 (T3) for two weeks in October, transitioning the Lava Fire back to the forests on October 20. In the end, the Lava Fire burned across 97,585 acres.
