Lightning-started on September 9, 2021, it grew to 97,000 acres through communities and large redwood  groves in the Sequoia National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument including the Trail of 100 Giants. Operational challenges included limited resources early on, and direct attack in heavy timber under red flag warnings. Values at risk included firefighters, area residents, 2,500 year-old Giant Sequoia trees and mountain communities including Johnsondale.
