Helicopters are an integral and invaluable part of wildland firefighting campaigns today. Varying in size, speed, and payload capacity, rotor-winged aircraft provide ground personnel a wide range of options during fireline operations. They can transport crews and supplies internally, or carry heavy loads by 'slingload' cargo nets. They are ideal agents of initial attack, delivering rappellers without landing. Their ability to land in small helispots greatly increases the safety and effectiveness of ground troops. Helicopters also shuttle large amounts of water from remote sources to the firelines in large buckets or 'belly tanks'. They are also utilized in reconnaissance and aerial firing operations.
