Several local residents were instrumental in saving their own homes and those of their neighbors, sweating it out in the face of an uncontrolled wildfire. They graciously thanked smokejumpers for their work with a BBQ and plenty of refreshing sodas. Several of us forfeited sleep for a fishing outing on the last night of our stay. The smokejumpers who defended the Wild Lake Community in 2005 are M. Desimone, T. Kendrick, A. Mattox, J. McKnight, M. McMillan, M. Mendonca, R. Miller, and C. Swisher. As the IC of the incident, I witnessed an impressive effort by all, on a demanding assignment with much at stake. |
