WILDFIRE AT THE YUKON RIVER CROSSING - ALYESKA PIPELINE THREATENED

|
The Hamlin Hills Fire burned along the Yukon River in late June, toward the Elliot Highway, two truck stops with restaurants, and the oil pipeline. Smokejumpers were dispatched from Fairbanks. Unable to fly through widespread smoke - we made the four-hour drive in pickups, joining a small group of firefighters on scene. Our first task was to mop-up the previous day's spotfires across containment lines. Crews made quick work of the 5-acre spotfire, finishing just as winds from the north began picking up.
