Fireline construction in the woods is made tedious by thick roots, rocks and long-burning fuels. Progress is aided by a light wind blowing acrid smoke away from the crew as they work directly on the fire's edge. Hot spots are cooled by shovels throwing dirt where water is out of reach. Support from water and retardant-dropping aircraft is hindered by the dense canopy above.
