Crews settle into 12-18 hour work-shifts during extended attack. Visits to fire camp are spent eating, sleeping and preparing gear for the next shift. Shower trailers and payphones may be in place, giving firefighters a choice of long lines to join before getting brief and much needed rest. Tents and sleeping bags litter lawns and open areas while crews sleep to the drone of camp generators. Fire camp is a workplace for support staff where cooperation keeps crews on task and on the line. The incident command works around the clock to direct fire operations. Supply units provide troops with replacement clothes and gear as equipment falls apart. Medical units tend to blistered feet and exhausted firefighters. When it's time to go back to work, helicopters and trucks shuttle crews to the firelines. Some leave rested, others relieved to escape life in camp.
