The problem of delivering and retrieving thousands of pounds of firefighting gear is solved with the sling-load. A metal cable and swivel connects a cargo net to the ship. This apparatus allows movement into unimproved areas unsuitable for landing. Storage of flammable or hazardous materials within the cargo hull is also avoided. Ground troops must connect a loaded cargo net to the cable by hand, though most ships can disengage their sling-loads at a remote swivel above the net.
